Energy

Watch movements utilize a variety of energy sources. For centuries, mechanical movements were the standard, harnessing potential energy stored within the timepiece's mechanism. Today, renewable energy sources like light are also widely used. This shift towards sustainable power sources in watchmaking reflects a growing concern for environmental impact and a desire for convenient, long-lasting timekeeping solutions.

Types of energy generation:

Mechanical-

hand-wind & automatic;

potential energy stored in a slowly unwound spring

Battery-

a chemical reaction in a cell generates electricity

Light-

utilizes photovoltaic cells to convert light into electricity and stored in a capacitor

Mechanical-electric-

an off-balance rotor turned by the wearer's motions generates electricity that is stored in a cell

Rechargeable -

a cell that can be repeatedly reenergized by connecting to a battery charger
